Epies and Christmas Cactus

This red epi has both flat and triangular growth. It is an older variety. The friends I got it from said that their great-uncle had grown it for years. The blossom is 6"-8" long and about 3" in diameter. It is probably an Ackermannii hybrid.

This pink epi came from a local greenhouse, but the owner didn't know the name of it. The growth is flat and the blossom is about 3" long and 2 1/2" in diameter. It is probably Deustche Kaserin.

Mother Dear won our in-house 2002 Christmas Cactus First Bloom contest with this 3 3/4" beauty:

Stem Differences between old and new hybrids of Christmas Cactus and Easter Cactus

This is a stem segment from an at least 75 year old Christmas cactus, also known as a Schlumbergia. Note that it has rounded edges.
This is the stem segment of a newer hybrid, the edges are much pointier.
This stem segment is from an Easter Cactus, also known as a Rhipsalidopsis. The edges are much rounder and mine have a red tinge to them.
This is the bloom of an Easter Cactus, note the difference in the shape from Mother Dear's Christmas cactus above.
